War is as old as time. Archaeologists have found fragments of bows, javelins, spears, slings, axes, clubs, swords and shields dating as far back as 3000 BCE. Even prehistoric humans made weapons to kill other humans.
WAR (N.):
fi ghting between nations, groups or states, using weapons and armies, causing vast destruction and loss of life
The earliest weapons were made from wood, stone or metal for close hand-to-hand combat. Then came spears, slings, catapults and crossbows – missiles to kill from a distance. Greater range came with warriors in chariots and cavalry on horseback.
Over time, weapons became more advanced and more powerful. Daggers, bayonets, muskets and cannon gave way to rifl es, machine guns, grenades and tanks.
In the twentieth century, two world wars brought battleships, torpedoes, aerial bombardment, howitzers and rocket launchers. The nuclear age brought long-range missiles, drones, warheads and the atom bomb.
In our age of cyber warfare, a nation or organisation can attack and damage another nation’s computers or networks through computer viruses.
