Hair Love is a funny, emotional short animated fi lm about gender roles, the challenges of sickness and the loss of a parent.
Director and writer Matthew A. Cherry and producer Karen Rupert Toliver won the Oscar for Best Animated Short for this fi lm. They wanted to draw people’s attention to the Crown Act, a Californian law that bans discrimination based on natural hairstyles, in the hope that more US states would adopt the law as well.
