Imagine you have pressed pause during a fi lm and the screen goes still: this is a frame. Look at everything in that frame. What things do you notice?
You should notice the setting, the lighting, the costume, actors, props and special eff ects. If you were to press play, you should hear dialogue and music, see action and choreography. All of these elements come under the heading
mise-en-scène. This
phrase comes from French theatre and it means ‘to put into a scene’.
Study this still from the movie The Avengers. Make a list of everything contributing to this mise-en-scène.

It is really important that you know the storyline of
your studied fi lm really well. Go to your Writing Skills Book to make notes on the storyline in your studied fi lm.
Costumes worn in fi lms or plays have a very important role to fulfi l. They communicate details of the character’s personality to the audience and help actors to transform into new and believable people. The right costume design can enhance the actor’s performance and the audience’s interpretation of the character.

What I will learn:

When you think of The Wizard of Oz, more than likely you see Dorothy in her blue dress and sparkly red shoes.
