Read these two PIE statements discussing survival and leadership. Decide which one sounds like Piggy and which one sounds like Ralph.
A POINT
We must bravely face our fears and work
together to reach our goal of being safely rescued.
ILLUSTRATE
There will be many boats
carrying goods or passengers across these waters.
POINT
It is crucial that you keep the fi res burning.
B ILLUSTRATE
Hunting can wait. We have an adequate supply of coconuts and fruits to survive on. However, there is a 50 per cent chance of a tropical storm occurring at this time of year, so our shelters must be prepared.
EXPLAIN
This horrifi c and tragic situation will not getthe better of us because we will work together to send signals. We will be resilient. We will be rescued. We will survive.
Now in your copy, write the PIE statement that you imagine Jack would make as leader. Remember, he would likely use persuasive language and be more bossy and threatening.
EXPLAIN
It wouldn’t make sense to spend our time hunting when we
have no shelter from the sun or the rain. We will not be able to work to our full potential if we are harmed by the weather.

I feel that rules are really important in a school. I don’t like them but I understand that they are there for a reason. It can be fun to chat to others but I hate it when others disrupt the class and we don’t get anything done. If the teacher didn’t have rules and consequences, then I wouldn’t learn anything because other students would disrupt the class all the time.

I also feel that when there are rules, I know where I stand. There was one time when I was in class and I stood up to go and empty my pencil sharpener in the bin. The teacher gave out to me and told me we were not allowed to do that. I was annoyed because she had never said it was a rule so I didn’t know. So that is why I think rules are important – so we all know what we can and cannot do.
