The poems in this section are based on the theme of ‘My Place in the World’. Before you start reading, work with a classmate to make a list of people or groups who sometimes struggle with fitting in or who are discriminated against in society. Now make a list of any films, books, poems, plays or documentaries that deal with these issues.

Alliteration and Assonance Music in Poetry:
A lot of poetry has musical qualities. As we noted earlier, onomatopoeia is very eff ective in giving a musical sound to a poem. Alliteration and assonance are also highly eff ective.
Alliteration is the repetition of the same letter at the beginning of words that are close together. Alliterative sounds create repetition, which creates rhythm, which then creates a
musical sound to a poem.
Assonance is the repetition of vowel sounds in words that are close together. This is also known as internal rhyme. Assonance creates a repetitive vowel rhythm by showing what syllables should be emphasised.
Look out for examples of alliteration and assonance in the next poem you will read.
