This iconic World War I poster, which features Lord Kitchener, an Irish-born senior British Army offi cer, appeared on the cover of a London magazine in September 1914. By December of that year, a million men had volunteered to join the British army.
Alfi e Knight, a young Irish boy living in Sandymount in Dublin, responded to Lord Kitchener’s appeal with a letter. Alfi e had a very innocent vision of war and of the role he believed he could play on the battlefi eld.
Alfi e’s letter is on display in the Imperial War Museum in London.
