Billy Elliot, a coalminer’s son living in a depressed mining town in northern England, has an unusual gift as a ballet dancer. Mrs Wilkinson, a local dance teacher, spots his talent and trains him, eventually landing him the opportunity to audition for the Royal Ballet in London, which has the potential to transform the rest of his life.
This scene depicts Billy going along to Mrs Wilkinson’s Saturday afternoon class, having delayed telling her the news that he has been accepted. It shows how we can sometimes be so overwhelmed by our feelings, we cannot express them. Instead, our conversation becomes awkward and maybe even hurtful.
What I will learn:
to understand characters
to reveal emotion in tone of voice
BILLY: Hello. MRS WILKINSON: Can I help you? BILLY: I just came to tell you – I got in. MRS WILKINSON: Oh. BILLY: My Dad thought you should know. MRS WILKINSON: It’s alright. They sent uz a letter when it happened.
