Dialogue is when direct speech becomes a conversation between two or more people.
‘What’re you reading? Is it any good?’ ‘It’s Misery by Stephen King. I’ve read it before, and yes, it is good.’ ‘If you’ve read it before, why’re you reading it again?’ asked Ethan. ‘It’s one of my favourite books.’
Indirect speech, also known as reported speech, is where the words someone has said are reported (orally or in text). A reporting verb is used and there are no quotation marks.
