Book covers are designed to make a reader pick up a book and buy it! Images, photographs, colours and font (how the letters look) all combine to create expectations about the story inside.
REVISING CCMC When you examine an image or a photograph, look out for:
Content Who or what is in the image/photograph?
Context When and where is the image/photo set, or what are the circumstances surrounding the image, in your opinion?
Message What message is the image/photo giving?
Colour Is the image/photo in black and white or in colour? What mood is created by the colour or lack of colour?
This cover for ‘The Landlady’, a short story by Roald Dahl which you will read in this collection, was designed by an illustrator. Examine it using the CCMC technique.

Blurbs
The back cover of most books will feature a blurb. You will remember that a blurb is a short description that promotes something, such as a book or fi lm.
Blurbs use attention-grabbing words and phrases. They may give a brief summary of plot and characters. They may feature questions or statements. They may add quotes from reviewers praising the book or fi lm.
