Write about the Eff ectiveness of a Key Moment [W8]
Choose a fi lm you have studied. Describe a key scene in which music played an important role.
Sample Answer (Higher Level) In the fi lm Sing Street, music is essential because the story follows a new band. Each song is memorable and tells us something about the diff erent relationships in the story. A key scene that demonstrates this is the gym scene where Conor plays ‘Drive It Like You Stole It’ to a packed hall. The lyric ‘You can’t seem to understand how I turned myself around’ sums up Conor’s message to all his friends and family that turn up in the dream sequence. He wants to tell them he can do it without them. The accompanying music is upbeat, catchy and a lit le bit rock ’n’ roll. This fi ts in very well with the idea of rebellion and showing his family he can become successful as a musician.
The song is also important because at that point in the fi lm the atmosphere is quite bleak. Conor’s parents have decided to get a divorce. Raphina hasn’t showed up to make the video and things are not looking good for the band. The song lifts the mood. The catchy lyrics and upbeat tempo are the perfect backdrop to the scene because the scene plays out what Conor hopes would happen in his life. His parents show up and dance, his brother arrives in as a hero and Raphina arrives looking for him. The music is fun and the fi lm needs it at this point in the story.
