Ray Bradbury was an American author who wrote numerous short stories. You have already read the opening lines to this fi rst short story, ‘All Summer in a Day’. This opening is a great example of Bradbury’s ability to ‘hook’ his readers by creating a sense of mystery. He also addresses a very powerful theme: bullying.
What I will learn:
to use the ‘Show, Don’t Tell’ technique
to examine the opening to a classic short story
to understand setting
REMEMBER: A theme is the
subject, topic or idea of a piece of writing, exhibition, collection of works, etc.
Working with a classmate, discuss any novels, short stories, dramas, poems or films that you have read/watched that have unusual or strange settings. Decide on one example to share with the class and describe it in detail to your classmates.
SETTING (N.):
the time and place of the action of a literary, dramatic or cinematic work
‘All Summer in a Day’ BY RAY BRADBURY
‘Ready?’ ‘Ready.’ ‘Now?’ ‘Soon.’
‘Do the scientists really know? Will it happen today, will it?’ ‘Look, look; see for yourself!’
The children pressed to each other like so many roses, so many weeds, intermixed, peering out for a look at the hidden sun. It rained.
