1. Setting is a very important element to be familiar with when trying to understand a piece of writing. Where do you think
this play is set and why is the setting important? 2. Are any of the characters friends?
3. Why, do you think, were such a diverse (diff erent from each other) group of children on the same plane?
4. Is there any evidence to indicate why their plane has crash- landed?
5. Write down the similarities and diff erences between the characters of Ralph and Piggy. You can use a Venn diagram or
a table to do this.
6. Who do you think will be elected leader of the group of boys? Give reasons for your answer.
Persuading Versus Arguing
When we write a speech, an opinion piece, an article or anything in which we want to give our point of view, we can decide whether we want to use persuasive language or argumentative language.
PERSUASIVE LANGUAGE
Persuasive language appeals to emotions and the heart. Persuasive writing uses emotive language and is mostly based on personal opinion and viewpoints.
REMEMBER:
Emotive language is the term used to describe words that are chosen deliberately to get an emotional reaction from the audience.
