You’ve heard the saying ‘Never judge a book by its cover’. However, the cover of a novel is the fi rst thing a potential reader will see. Covers will infl uence whether a reader buys a book or not.

1. Find a novel you haven’t read and examine its cover, referring to the features of a book cover.
2. Match the following descriptions with their covers.
A. This cover uses a peculiar illustration of an animal. He is smoking a pipe and holding an object that has wires. In the background, there is a thunder cloud, a radio and a barbed wire fence. It makes me think that this book is not a straightforward story about animals.
B. The illustration on this cover is an overhead shot of a boat at sea. There are a variety of diff erent sea creatures in the sea below, suggesting they are right in the middle of the ocean. It is strange to see a tiger on a boat, let alone with a human! There is a big circle on the front saying that it has won the Man Booker Prize, so it suggests that this book is worth a read.
C. This cover features an illustration of a fl ying car. This suggests magic, so you know that this book is a fantasy novel. The font doesn’t suggest anything in particular, but it makes the name of the character the most important part of the title.
