Write about the Eff ectiveness of a Key Moment [W8]
Describe the opening scene of a fi lm you have studied that had an impact on you. Explain why it had an impact on you.
Sample Answer (Higher Level) The opening scene of Sing Street begins with a medium shot of Conor who is sit ing on a bed with a guitar. He is dressed in layers of clothes and a hat as if he is cold. He begins to sing while playing the instrument. The background noises soon become louder and we can hear a male and female voice shouting at each other, talking about leaving each other. We understand that these voices belong to his parents. Conor then changes his singing by mimicking their statements and put ing it to music.
This scene had an impact on me because at fi rst we think that Conor is just a normal teenage boy hanging out in his bedroom. When we look more closely at his costume, we realise his bulky clothes are out of necessity. His house is cold. Already, we feel sorry for him and wonder what is going on in his life. The loud and excessive shouting coming from his parents deepens our pity for him. However, the moment isn’t sad, it is actually quite funny. When Conor sings the words coming from his parents, their words become childish and silly. It shows us that it is possible to fi nd ways to deal with negative things in our lives.
