This fi lm is about a young boy’s experience of moving from a small rural school in Africa to Ireland: a new country, a diff erent school system and a whole new set of customs.
Watch the fi lm and then complete the tasks.
What I will learn:
For some students, moving to a new school is a smooth and easy transition. For others, it is diffi cult to fi t in and a real challenge to make new friends.
Think back to when you started secondary school or if you ever had to move school. Now, working in groups, make a list of all the words you associate with starting/moving school.
to explore the feelings of a character in a fi lm
Make a list of fi ve events that happen in the fi lm and then write down one sentence to describe how you think the new boy feels about the event and why. For example: ‘The teacher introduces the boy to the class. I think that he feels embarrassed because he is standing in front of the whole class and they are looking at him.’
Imagine that you are the new boy in this fi lm. Write two short diary entries: one from the night before you start school and one from the night after your fi rst day in school.
