Socially sustainable supply chain While globalisation presents an immense opportunity to produce affordable goods and services at scale, it also poses complex global socioeconomic risks. Now more than ever before, there is strong interest in social standards such as working conditions, fair labour practices, and health and safety, and how well organisations uphold and respect the wellbeing of individuals along the entire value chain is continuously being scrutinised. Social sustainability is one of the pillars

of a sustainable supply chain and is as important as both economic and environmental sustainability. After all, a product that is good for the environment but has negative consequences for workers’ or local communities is not truly sustainable. The social dimension of sustainability is

concerned with ensuring that organisations and their partners across the supply chain manage their operations in a way that promotes human and labour rights, a supportive working environment, and health and safety. It is also focused on measures aimed at improving ethical business practices while having a positive impact on communities along the supply chain. Additionally, consumers tend to view the businesses they support as an extension of themselves. As consumer interest in ethical beauty and personal care continues to soar and consumers become more informed about issues such as child labour, forced labour, and gender

discrimination, they may choose to support companies that are actively managing the social and environmental impacts of their supply chains – those that ensure adherence to proper labour, safety, and security standards, uphold the standards of fair trade and social equality, and support and enrich communities along the value chain. As such, BPC brands are increasingly

focusing their efforts on driving change through actions that support people and communities along the supply chain. Such socially responsible supply chain management can help create, protect, and grow lasting value for stakeholders along the value chain. By

implementing socially responsible supply chain practices, companies can protect the long-term viability of their business and secure a social license to operate.

Benefits of a sustainable supply chain A fully sustainable supply chain is one that ensures responsible business practices which are not only good for the planet and people, but which also support profitable operations. In fact, a sustainable supply chain offers several benefits, including reduced environmental impact, improved continuity of supply, protection against reputational risk and damage, and greater potential for partnerships and business growth. End-users are increasingly looking for more

than just the product they are paying for – they want environmental accountability, waste- minimising production, and transparency. As such, the BPC industry is under increasing pressure to demonstrate and maintain due diligence in their supply chains. In support of this, the chemical industry is

increasingly striving for holistic sustainability by addressing environmental, social, economic and legal concerns across its entire supply chain. Although challenging, BPC businesses who

are committed to operating responsibly and integrating sustainable practices along the entire supply chain will ultimately reap the rewards.
