SUSTAINABILITY

across all sectors to design and discover new chemicals, production processes, and product stewardship practices that will provide increased performance and increased value while meeting the goals of protecting and enhancing human health and the environment”. The measurement of renewability is well defined, it can be evaluated by the bio carbon content of the material. Figure 3 shows the difference between “old carbon” and “new carbon also called bio-carbon.10

Bio-carbon content The bio-carbon content is based on the amount of biogenic carbon present, and defined as the amount of bio carbon in the material/ product as fraction weight (mass) or percent weight (mass) of the total organic carbon in the material/product. Under the ASTM D6866 Standard Test

Methods for Determining the Biobased Content of Solid, Liquid, and Gaseous Samples Using Radiocarbon Analysis,10

it can be calculated

thus: Percentage of bio or bio-based (carbon)

content = Bio (organic) carbon/total (organic carbon) * 100 The objective is to strive to increase bio-

carbon in both raw materials and finished formulations.

3. Available Consider the number of times a raw material has not been available. This problem has been exacerbated since COVID-19, but there are raw materials that experience wide swings in cost and are often unavailable.

4. Green One of the most significant contribution to the environmental technology arena is the development of the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry (Figure 4).11

These principles

will ultimately need to be included in any sustainability standard.

Conclusions From the above, we can draw the following six conclusions. Sustainability includes environmental impacts, social and economic value, and governance of the beauty and personal care products industry.12 Dedicated to improving the wellbeing

of people and the planet, united in our commitment to operate responsibly and integrate sustainable practices along the entire lifecycle of the products we manufacture and market. Implementation of a sustainability

programme can be accomplished in gradual programme or can be done more quickly depending upon marketing and technical accomplishments. In designing formulations, the objective must

be clearly defined using established metrics. The selection of a clearly defined target will

determine which approach is useful. Functionality in formulation, which is the

result of many interactions will be the basis of selecting raw materials.
