INTERVIEW So we created research

libraries that contain hundreds of sample formulations, detailed ingredient profiles with the latest research. We also do equipment reviews, and tell our students where to buy it. Most importantly, we drop in

what we call a mini lab. This is a monthly mini course that contains a couple of short lessons that can be worked through in a matter of hours. Those mini labs are now certified by CPD UK, so you get a CPD (Continuing Professional Development) certificate and a nice little badge - we’re all about the badges!

TP: Is there anything else in the pipeline? LD: We are currently going through a massive overhaul of our educational programme, we do that on a very regular basis, that is a sizeable undertaking. We also teach a huge masterclass that we make free to everyone. Last year, we taught 100,000 people how to make an emulsion. Our goal is just to get those

masterclasses in front of 500,000 a year, and we’re quite excited about the opportunities that come with that.

TP: What is your proudest achievement at Formula Botanica? LD: We have a huge spectrum of graduates but one thing that stands out in their stories is how

their lives changed when they took that step. We’re responsible for that, and that is probably the biggest privilege I’ve had in my professional career. It’s very easy to think we’re just

training up some formulators but these people are making a real impact in the world, like hiring staff or moving into commercial premises. We’ve got graduates who

have raised millions of dollars in investment funding and have products in Boots and Sephora. Even if it’s just a side hustle, it is something that brings in a supplementary income that can completely change lives.

TP: What are your tips for anyone who wants to become a formulator? What makes a good formulator? LD: You have to be inquisitive, because you’re constantly researching your ingredients. You have to have tenacity, because you won’t just make one product and sell it straight away. You must also want to experiment. When I started out, I would make multiple different versions of the same product, tweaking different percentages slightly to see what the skin texture would be like etc. I think all of these of

characteristics, together with perseverance and making sure that you get to where you want to be with your formulation, is what every formulator needs.
