A team of US researchers from the Harvard Medical School, in Boston, have discovered that some people who are overweight have hidden fat inside their bones that could make them weak and therefore prone to fractures. The study suggests that obesity may be a risk factor for the frail bone disease osteoporosis.
The team conducted body scans on 106 overweight but healthy men and women. The scans revealed that some of those tested carry fat in hidden places like the liver, muscles and bone marrow as well as their belly, hips or thighs.

Dr Miriam Bredella, who carried out the work, stated that apple- shaped people who carry weight around their waist may be at greatest risk. The osteoblast cells are responsible for new bone formations and live in the bone marrow, it is believed by Dr.Bredella and her team that if more of the marrow is taken over by fat cells this will then weaken the bones.
Dr Bredella stated that if your spine is full of fat, then obviously it won’t be as strong as it could be. It was once thought that obesity was protective against bone loss. She and her team have found that this is not true.
The results of this study, which can be found in the journal Radiology, suggest that bone marrow fat in obese men and women has been found in higher-than-normal levels in people who have osteoporosis.
