The benefits of regular intense resistance training are well known and are the same for weightlifting as for bodybuilding style training. Using the Olympic lifts or their variations has the added benefits of requiring and developing mobility, core stability, speed and power - useful physical qualities whether you need to run for the bus or jump up to dunk a basketball!

Journal: Is it suitable for most people, or can it be adapted to meet the needs of most clients? GW: As well as the full classical lifts (snatch, and clean and jerk), many assistance exercises have been developed to improve weightlifting performance. These usually involve concentrating on the part of the lift which is weakest to improve results in the classical lifts – “a chain is only as strong as its weakest link,” as my coach would say.

These partial lifts can also be used to avoid parts of the movement. For example, a power clean is the same as a clean but you don’t receive the bar in a low squat position, so if you have a knee problem you can still get many of the benefits of performing cleans without hurting yourself further.

Many of these partial lifts also require less skill so are more accessible to beginners. This resource of assistance exercises means that most people can enjoy the benefits of weightlifting even if they find the full lifts difficult or impossible. Most people can become proficient enough at the lifts with a bit of coaching and encouragement to enjoy and benefit from training the full movements.

Journal: How would you answer concerns some trainers may have about the over-extension of some joints that certain positions require (e.g. the deep knee bend in the clean and jerk)? GW: The full range, whole body movements performed in weightlifting lead to a balanced and functional body. I’m yet to hear of any good reason why healthy people shouldn’t perform a low squat, as long as it’s done correctly. There
