CPD AUDIT

I’m often asked about how CPD points can be logged more easily and how they are assessed, as well as why we have them! As an evidence-based register, all REPs members, in common with many other professional bodies, have to undertake sufficient continuing professional development points (CPD) in order to remain current and re-register.

Currently CPD is officially defined as: “a range of learning activities through which professionals maintain and develop throughout their career to ensure that they retain their capacity to practise safely, effectively and legally within their evolving scope of practice.

Because REPs membership is seen as a “license to practise” it’s vital that there is a process of ensuring all members have current and relevant knowledge, as well as the competence and skills to do their specific job.

In order to show they’re still “fit to practise” REPs members have to accrue 24 points over a rolling two-year period. Generally our members are very conscientious about logging their endorsed courses, however, REPs must carry out regular audits to make sure members are current and to safeguard the public. To do this we conduct a series of audits where we check and verify the CPD status of a sample number of members. Each chosen member is sent a special CPD audit pack including forms on: l CPD endorsed courses

l REPs on-line CPD

l Other CPD category

l Additional comments.

All CPD undertaken from the date of joining the Register can be logged on the forms provided. These are then assessed and the validity of the CPD activity is determined in that discipline to ensure it complies with the member’s role within the industry e.g. a gym instructor cannot undertake CPD in Pilates, they must hold the Pilates qualification before it can be logged as CPD. ndorsed CPD with allocated REPs points can be easily logged. REPs CPD Compliance Manager Dottie Calderwood explains the role of the REPs CPD Audit process

The audit process will not affect a member’s registration while their profile is being assessed. However, a member’s status may be affected if there is no valid reason as to why they did not provide CPD evidence.

Once the audit has been carried out, we will let members as to whether they have successfully passed the audit.

The recent audit found that most members in the sample are undertaking a sufficient amount of CPD to remain on the Register, however this was not the case for everyone and a small percentage will have to undertake more CPD in order to remain on the Register.
