EREPs news Our man in Europe
Registrar of the European Register of Exercise Professionals Cliff Collins writes: “In some European countries working in fitness is regulated by law which means certain national requirements and conditions have to be met to be given a licence to work. This can be both very helpful in giving a clear guide for fitness professionals, but it can also make the industry extremely difficult to break into from the outside.
“One of the main principles of the European Union is to allow the free movement of labour (known as mobility) and for delivering services (businesses). This means that the countries, which regulate fitness, must also allow non-nationals to work – but on the condition they meet their national requirements. Our figures show more than 10% of our members change country every year – so levels of mobility are very high.
“The great leveller across movement in the fitness industry is EREPs, because it gives members recognition of achievement (qualifications and competencies) which they can take with them wherever they travel. Their certificate of registration and listing on our directory proves that they have met the European standards.”
SkillsActive News Changes to CPD
SkillsActive Endorsement Manager Tom Bell explains up and coming changes to CPD points for REPs members.
He writes: “CPD qualifications (non-REPs entry categories) that sit on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) will be awarded 16 REPs CPD points from the end of January 2013, instead of the current 20. These changes are being made to match the amount of hours of study required and to bring these qualifications in-line with all SkillsActive CPD approved training.
“Members who are mid-way through a course or who have recently finished a course should still be able to log the number of CPD points advertised. However all training providers have been aware of this change in requirements since July and may have already adjusted the CPD point levels. All changes will take effect from the end of January 2013.
“Although these changes might seem complicated they were necessary in order to bring parity across the range of qualifications available.
“CPD is still a developing area and we are constantly looking at ways of making it fairer. REPs members will still be able to use these courses to earn the bulk of their annual CPD requirements.”
