Welcome
Ten years ago I was working as a tutor/assessor, PT and teaching ETM, when I first heard about the Register of Exercise Professionals.
I remember thinking that it was a great idea in theory but that I’d wait to see if it actually worked! Although I thought that self-regulation of this kind was much needed, it wasn’t the first time something like this had been tried and I was keen to see if this time it would succeed.

However right from the beginning REPs felt different. For the first time fitness professionals were behind the project and joined it in numbers that meant people had to take notice. REPs also had the support of employers and training providers, the Fitness Industry Association and later the newly-formed SkillsActive, the sector skills council for active leisure and learning too. Its success was also due in no small part to the drive of Cliff Collins, the first Registrar.
Being registered shows you are a professional who has met industry standards. Membership tells the world that the sector is serious, professional, credible and can be trusted to make a difference to people’s lives. It sets you apart from those who cannot prove that they have met industry agreed standards. In this historic Olympic and 10th anniversary year, growing the REPs membership is central to our core work. To this end we are launching your growth strategy, focussing on public awareness and building on the legacy of London 2012.
I am immensely proud of REPs, its members and all we have achieved in those 10 short years – both as a member, an outside observer and, for the last three years, Registrar. I feel excited to be part of it and hope you, our members, do too.
Jean-Ann Marnoch, Registrar
