EREPs News Promoting The Fitness Sector In Europe
The European Health and Fitness Association (EHFA) and European Register of Exercise Professionals recently presented to the EU’s Sport Platform of leading stakeholders and at the Sport Forum in Nicosia, Cyprus.
They were also able to talk directly to Ministers for Sport from across Europe and leading agencies, about the Fitness Against Doping project and the newly developed Anti-doping Code of Conduct which includes new training for exercise professionals in this area.
At a personal presentation to Mrs. Androulla Vassiliou (EU Commissioner for Education) the EHFA Programmes Director Cliff Collins was able to emphasise the valuable work that the fitness industry had already provided the wider sector. As a result the EHFA is now a member of the expert group on anti-doping, which is advising the Council and Commission on its strategy.
The organisation has also launched a new level 5 Standard for Exercise for Health Specialist and at level 4 for Active Ageing Trainer with a graduate entry to EREPs planned for 2013. www.ehfa.eu and www.ereps.eu
SkillsActive News
SkillsActive’s Endorsement Manager, Tom Bell explains their latest developments working with Training Providers across the United States:
For the last year SkillsActive and the American College of Exercise (ACE) have been working together to recognise each other’s membership organisations’ approved training.
What this means in real terms for REPs Registered Instructors is that they can now earn CPD points from ACE qualifications. We believe this will open a wealth of new opportunities for them and allow them to offer an even better service to their clients. It also means that any UK courses REPs Registered Instructors take will be recognised in America.

Each of the participants received a health check at baseline and at the final stage of the programme (12 weeks).
One of the reasons we took this move is because there is no Register in the States and this is a way of ensuring training on both sides of the pond is recognised. We hope this is just the start of a long-term collaboration and look forward to bringing you more news soon.

ukactive’s Research Institute Launches New Study
Following a pilot study into the effectiveness of physical activity and structured exercise the Research Institute of ukactive (formerly known as the Fitness Industry Association) has begun full investigation into: lStructured exercise intervention in comparison to unstructured use.
lPhysical activity counselling upon modifiable cardiovascular risk factors.
lPhysiological performance markers.
During the pilot, 105 people aged between 35 and 55 took part in either a structured exercise programme at a leisure centre or attended fortnightly physical activity counselling sessions which encouraged them to be more active.
The study reported a 92% retention rate and 99% of the participants stated they enjoyed their experience.
The structured exercise group reduced their systolic blood pressure by an average of 7mmHg. In addition they reduced their body mass by 2%, fat mass by 6.6%, and resting heart rate by 6.15%.
Although the Physical Activity counselling group were inactive and started “from a lower base”, participants still saw a decrease in their fat mass by an average 2.3kg. Their resting heart rate reduced by nine beats per minute and systolic blood pressure by 3mmHg. A quarter of this group have now joined the Centre and participate in regular physical activity counselling.
In addition we hope that Training Providers from the UK will now be able to promote their courses to Instructors in the States, opening a whole new market for them too. Under the new agreement, Instructors in the US will be able to earn ACE recognised Continuing Education Credits (CEC) – their equivalent of CPD – from SkillsActive endorsed UK training.
