Become a ‘best-selling trainer’ with these six steps to success

Exercise Professional Tim Drummond shares his expert advice on how to become a published author

being a fitness professional. In order to do this, I initially focused on why I become a trainer. I wanted to help as many people as possible, while still having time to train, eat well, take holidays, spend time with my friends and overall make my business work for me, not me for it.

Early on I decided that one aim I had was to write a book. But whenever I thought I was finally ready to tackle it, fear and self-doubt kicked in.

This is the first factor you need to work on if you also want to see your book for sale on Amazon.

Here are my top six tips for writing your own fitness book.

Tip one: negative thoughts and people Internally I struggled with a fear that I could not write. I realised I have a certain style, that some readers will like, and others won’t. But I still wanted to offer my knowledge.

When I told people I was going to write a book I got a lot of negative reactions. Some people will always say pessimistic things about what you are doing. Just remember your book will help change people’s lives and ignore the negativity.

Tip two: your ‘WHY’ Understand ‘WHY’ you want to do this. Write down 10 reasons for writing a book; pick your top three and have them at hand for when the going gets tough.

Tip three: understand your current value or build that value Many of the better PTs I come across have so much knowledge sitting in their heads, but they don’t recognise it. If this is you, wake up. If not go and study first. Use your aim as motivation to better yourself.

Tip five: planning is vital Setting the content for your book is actually

simpler than you may think. Identify the 10 biggest problems in your target market, these will be your chapters.

Tip six: understand the value in writing a book Although it may make you some money, writing a book will not make you rich. Know you are doing this for the sense of achievement, and to show your authority as a leader in the fitness sector. Happy writing budding authors!
