InSURAnCE Insurance issues for members
REPS insurance scheme Unlike some other, “off the shelf” insurance policies, the REPs Insurance Scheme has been specifically designed to fully match the REPs structure and provide Civil Liability cover for all activities appropriate to the level of training and qualification of individual members.
The change in REPs structure has led to a number of enquiries from members, particularly existing members who gained their qualification under the old structure, as to what they can and cannot do to adhere to the Code of Practice and to ensure that their insurance will provide protection in the event of things going wrong.
One of the key differences between the old REPs structure and the new, flexible structure launched earlier this year, is the inclusion at level 2 (and level 3) of key safety knowledge regarding some special populations. This knowledge enables instructors at level 2 to adapt their mainstream class/session to include the occasional client who is an older adult or who is pregnant/just had a baby or who has a disability.
Armed with the key safety knowledge learned while attaining their level 2 qualification, a newly qualified member conducting a routine which includes an expectant/new mum, for example, would be engaged in an activity which accords with their level
of qualification and they would therefore be insured for this. However, it would be generally be good practice to direct clients to any relevant specialist sessions on offer.
It is very important to note that the new level 2/3 qualifications do not cover the running of dedicated whole classes/sessions for the special population groups. Any member wishing to do so would need to undertake the specific qualifications in the relevant area.
Unfortunately, under the old structure level 2 and 3 members may not have key safety knowledge to adapt their class/session to accommodate a member of these specific client groups meaning the member would be acting outside of their level of qualification and therefore the Code of Practice.
To help existing level 2 members gain the key safety knowledge for these special population groups, REPs provides an on-line resource that also gives CPD points. On successful completion of this on-line CPD, members can adapt classes to meet the relevant specialist needs of occasional clients’, safe in the knowledge their insurance is not compromised.
