The European Health and Fitness Association (EHFA) has just completed the biggest research programme on how the fitness sector can be more involved with health professionals and government campaigns to get more people taking up regular, supervised exercise. The recommendations will have a wide-reaching impact on how policies and campaigns will be run in the future, with the fitness sector having an increasing role to play.
Cliff Collins, registrar for the European Register of Exercise Professionals said: “This piece of work will change the way the fitness industry will be moving forward. One of the critical recommendations is the need for there to be an
acceptance and development of exercise professionals to achieve higher skills. The EHFA is developing a full 8-level qualification structure that will greatly improve the career prospects and opportunities for exercise professionals – and it will include those who have come through university-based courses”.
The UK’s Fitness Industry Association (FIA) was an important partner in this research project.
Taking responsibility for health
Chairman of the Fitness Industry Association, Fred Turok has been invited to co-chair the Physical Activity Network of the Department of Health’s Responsibility Deal for Public Health initiative, which aims to promote a shared social responsibility between Government and organisations to improve the health of the nation.
The core principles of the Responsibility Deal Board will be to recognise the role businesses and organisations play in promoting and enabling people to follow healthier diets, fostering a culture of responsible drinking, encouraging and assisting people to become more physically active, and to actively support the workforce to lead healthier lives.

As well as the FIA, the Board also includes representatives from Unilever, Diabetes UK, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, ASDA, and the Premier League.
Fred said: “The Responsibility Deal provides a fantastic opportunity to unite the nation in a positive movement with physical activity at the heart of it.
“This is an all encompassing deal which requires an all encompassing approach – there’s never been a better and more appropriate time for our industry to get people moving.”
Fred, and his co-chair health minister Simon
Burns, will report to a Board chaired by Andrew Lansley the Secretary of State for Health.
