According to research conducted by The University of Copenhagen, the natural antioxidant compound, known as resveratol, found in red grapes and other plants, blocks many of the cardiovascular benefits of exercise for older men. Whilst antioxidants have received

a lot of media attention in recent years, The University of Copenhagen surprisingly suggests that eating a diet rich in antioxidants may actually counteract many of the health benefits of exercise, including reduced blood pressure and cholesterol.

Twenty seven healthy 65 year- old men who were physically inactive took part in an 8 week experiment. All the men performed high-intensity exercise training. Half of the group then received 250mg of resveratrol daily the other half received a placebo pill (containing no active

Lowering ghrenlin levels may reduce chances of obesity

An International group of scientists have solved the mystery of the obesity gene, FTO, which greatly increases the risk of obesity in one in six people.

The two copies of the FTO gene are passed down to us, one from each parent, and come in a high and low-risk form. Those with two high risk copies are thought to be 70% more likely to become obese than those with low-risk genes. The Journal of Clinical Investigation published a study that showed fatty foods more tempting and altered levels of hunger hormone, ghrelin.

Dr Batterham, the Head of the Centre for Obesity Research at University College London, believes that understanding how the FTO gene affects the odds of becoming overweight will help tackle obesity early on. Targeting ghrenlin might reduce the chances of weight gain and exercise such as cycling has shown to be an excellent way to lower ghrelin levels.

The experiment found that exercise training was highly effective by improving cardiovascular health parameters. The resveratrol supplementation however reduced the positive effects of training on several parameters including blood pressure, plasma lipid concentrations and maximal oxygen uptake.
