I have to say. In some respects, regulation in the cosmetics industry can be more restrictive than, for example, the biomedical industry. The new EU nanomaterials
regulation, and the microplastics and PFAS regulations are new types of regulation that will affect the development of new products. This will make the development of new cosmetic products more difficult in the future. On the other hand, regulation is something that can push you on to look at alternative solutions. So, the strict regulation will
be translated into new ideas. For example, it is generating new ideas about obtaining new ingredients from plants using biotechnologies, fermentation, as well as improving existing processes.
TP: Laurie - what other challenges do you see coming down the road in terms of product development? LC: Final consumers have become very knowledgeable about products and product positioning. They expect more from their products, and more from the cosmetic industry. They expect products that are really efficient with claims that they can verify.
www.personalcaremagazine.com In addition, they want
ingredients that have a good balance between sustainability and efficiency. This raised level of consumer expertise is something we have to consider when developing ingredients, and in the way we market them. With ingredients, the vocabulary
used now is different from what was used in the industry ten years ago. The vocabulary we are able to use has been expanded, even if we have to stay consumer-friendly with the language.
TP: Now we come to the almost obligatory question about artificial intelligence. Ricard, your company Provital is known as being science-led and at the cutting edge of cosmetic science. Are you using AI – by that I mean large language models - in your product development? RA: We use AI in different departments, including marketing. In R&D, we’re specifically using AI for our efficacy studies. We have developed many different algorithms to identify images, to measure images, to be able to detect age in photos of volunteers. We are developing this kind of tool
