Inflammation and healing process The wound healing process is complex,


triggered by chemical, physical, or biological aggression. It relies on the coordinated activation of several cell types, including platelets, neutrophils, macrophages, endothelial cells, and fibroblasts. These cells release pro-inflammatory


mediators, followed by resolution mediators, orchestrating tissue repair and homeostasis restoration. This process occurs in three overlapping major phases:


1. Inflammatory phase (initiation phase) This phase starts immediately after injury or infection, characterized by the rapid activation of immune cells and pro-inflammatory mediators such as cytokines, prostaglandins, leukotrienes, and histamine. These mediators activate immune cells and trigger classic inflammation symptoms (redness, heat, pain, swelling), aiming to eliminate pathogens or cellular debris and prepare the tissue for resolution.

2. Resolution phase (anti-inflammatory phase) Once inflammation is activated, it is crucial that the process resolves in an orderly manner to avoid chronic inflammation. This phase is regulated by specific resolution mediators, including resolvins (derived from omega-3 fatty acids), protectins, maresins, and TGF-β (Transforming Growth Factor-beta). These molecules halt inflammation, repair damaged tissues, and restore homeostasis.
