Clariant expands Chinese chemical-making capacity

Clariant is expanding care chemicals production at its Daya Bay production site in Huizhou, Guangdong province. The move will complement

Clariant’s northern China production site in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu province, which makes personal care ingredients such as surfactants, emollients, preservatives and emulsifiers. Clariant personal and home

care global vice-president Michael Haspel said the upgrade would increase capacity at Daya Bay by approximately 50 per cent. The expansion is due to be

fully operational by the end of the year, he added. “We are expanding capacity at the Daya Bay production site

in Huizhou, Guangdong province in order to have a full line of products in both northern and southern China,” said Haspel. The expansion comes as Lucas

Meyer Cosmetics by Clariant made two global launches at PCHi 2025 in Guangzhou: GlowCytocin and Melicica. Sourced from Dutch hyacinth

bulbs, GlowCytocin is to said to enhance pleasurable skin sensations and delivers a calming effect, while visibly improving skin radiance. “GlowCytocin is a significant

step forward in neurocosmetics and skincare, offering both immediate and long-term benefits for skin appearance and emotional wellbeing,” said Isabelle Lacasse,

head of global marketing, product line management and formulation at Lucas Meyer Cosmetics. Meanwhile, Melicica has a natural and holistic approach to skin recovery by alleviating discomfort from skin irritation in addition to providing emotional relief to boost self- confidence. The ingredient is a natural

extract of Jelly Bush honey, also known as Australian Manuka honey. Melicica has potential

applications in skin repair, scar and acne-prone skin care, tone evening and brightening, texture improvement, baby care, sensitive skin solutions, post-procedure recovery and stretch mark care.

Care Global at PCHi 2025 in Guangzhou, Dr. Li Huiliang (pictured) highlighted opportunities for foreign companies to enter or collaborate in the Chinese market. Dr. Li noted that many key

ingredients in C-beauty products, such as oils, preservatives, emulsfiers and surfactants, are imported. Dr. Li, who is chairman of PCHi’s

Cosmetics Science and Technology Innovation Committee, said Chinese brands are innovating in personal care but there are gaps in the market. For example, he said, there are

not many mature product lines for personal care in China, which presents an opportunity for new launches. C-beauty is booming, he added, in part due to consumers looking for products that deliver results. Florasis is a luxury C-beauty

brand based in Hangzhou, blends traditional Chinese aesthetics and beauty rituals with modern technology to create high-quality makeup and skin care. It is aiming for global expansion and a unique brand experience, especially emphasizing the cultural heritage in its products. Brands incorporate Chinese

cultural elements—such as embroidery and calligraphy—into packaging and branding to add depth. Florasis is working on a new

personal care line designed to enhance “radiance” and “good chi,” added Dr. Li, reflecting Eastern beauty ideals. The brand incorporates

explained traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) ingredients in carefully balanced combinations to achieve results such as radiance, skin whitening, and anti-ageing. Dr. Li shared that his company

has already developed a formula and completed safety testing, and they are awaiting patent approval.
