Tacking a Multihull
Tacking a multihull requires a slightly different technique. A multihull’s light weight and wide beam causes the boat to stop quickly when it comes head to wind in the middle of the tack. To prevent this, make sure the boat is sailing fast on a close-hauled course before the tack.
The Helm
The checks and communication with the crew are the same as in a dinghy:
2. Leading with the front foot, move into the middle and kneel on the trampoline, facing aft. As the mainsheet traveller moves into the centre, rotate the tiller extension aft (behind) the mainsheet.
3. Pass the extension to the other side and change hands on the mainsheet. As soon as the boat passes head to wind, ease the mainsheet a little. Bear away slightly and sheet in until the boat picks up speed, then luff back to close-hauled.
The Crew 船员
To start the tack, push the tiller extension to turn the rudders to an angle of sheet in the mainsail tightly to help the boat turn into the wind.
