Sailing boats do not have brakes so to stop you have to make use of your boat controls and the wind. To do this, turn the boat onto a close reach and let out the sails until they flap. The boat will stop in the ‘lying-to’ position with the sails out on the leeward side. It is also possible to stop by turning head to wind, but the boat will not stay in this position for long. Use the lying-to position whenever you need to stop the boat temporarily. To start sailing again, pull in the sails and, as the boat moves forwards, steer onto the new course.
