Differing strengths of wind make fish scales or dark patches (ripples) on the surface. Smooth or calmer water generally indicates lower wind speed, a temporary lull. As the wind freshens, or during a gust, the density of such effects increases, causing the water to become disturbed or choppy, possibly leading to the formation of small waves.

If you sail closely behind or downwind of another sailor, you will be affected by the water state and wind turbulence from their boat.

Gauging the wind strength is a skill that you’ll gradually develop. Hand-held wind-speed readers (anemometers) can be useful as a guide to wind strength.

The gradient of the beach will determine what the sea state is at different tide levels. This is why it is always a good idea to have a look at a new location at different states of tide and ask others for advice so you can gain more knowledge.

Water Depth ⽔深
Tides flow faster in deeper channels than in shallow water. For example, in an estuary, where the water is likely to be deeper in the middle, the tidal flow will be greater in the middle than it will be by the shore.
