An increase of water flow occurs when tidal streams meet and/or are disrupted by an island, headland or submerged object. This can lead to unusual tidal patterns and water states and may make your sailing unnecessarily challenging. Again, local knowledge can help you identify where such hazards are and how best to deal with them or avoid them altogether.
Wind blowing against tidal flow can produce choppy or even very rough conditions, especially if the tidal flow is strong. This may be ideal for the experts, but it’s not so good for the intermediate looking for a smooth ride!
