Once your boat is away from the shore in clear water you will be able to start steering under sail. The person who steers is called the helm, while the others on board are called the crew.
The helm generally sits on the windward side of the boat forward of the tiller and holds the tiller extension in his or her rear hand. In a two-person boat the crew sits just forward of the helm.
On your first sail you will learn how to steer the boat using the tiller extension. By pushing or pulling on the tiller extension, the rudder will turn to change the boat’s course.
