18. STARTING TO RACE 18.
One of the best ways to develop your new-found sailing skills is to start racing. Most clubs organise racing for their members and visitors. Many dinghy, keelboat and multihull classes organise open meetings where you can race against some of the top sailors in your class.
To start with, visit your local sailing club and find someone who needs a crew or, if you have your own boat, join a club that offers racing for the class.

Types of Race Courses
Many different courses can be set to suit the type of boats and local conditions. Dinghies, multihulls and small keelboats often sail a sausage course, featuring a series of upwind and downwind legs, but there are also triangular or square courses. Details of the course will be found in the sailing instructions, together with information on starting signals, special rules etc.
