NUTRICOSMETICS
are other key drivers for market growth. As consumers are paying increasing attention to the origin of the products they buy, the desire for more naturally and sustainably sourced products is also rising in the nutricosmetics segment. With some people deciding to
change their lifestyle and become more environmentally conscious, such behaviour has resulted in a shift to a more natural way of life. Being environmentally friendly is becoming the norm. As a consequence, there is growing demand for sustainable ingredients. The global beauty industry is therefore
looking for plant-based sources of traditional ingredients, such as antioxidants, and is starting to focus on algae. Almost at the bottom of the marine food chain, microalgae-derived astaxanthin fulfils consumer demand for more natural, vegetarian and sustainable products. As it is sourced from algae, astaxanthin’s
quality is affected by the environment in which the algae are cultivated. Unlike other companies who source astaxanthin from Haematococcus pluvialis, AstaReal rejects outdoor production methods as they are susceptible to contamination. Instead, the company processes its algae indoors under controlled conditions. This results in a safe product with at least 5% astaxanthin content in the biomass and without any impurities, such as solvent residues, which can be found in other ingredients.
Nutricosmetic trends To develop successful beauty-from-within products, companies should differentiate them by using unique ingredients and delivery formats. Astaxanthin offers product developers a broad range of combination and dosage options to address particular target groups, whether in capsule, liquid shot or sachet format. Gummy products, for instance, can provide skin care on the go for Generation Z, making
63 Furthermore, consumers are highly receptive
to hybrid products that comprise a blend of ingredients. Here, astaxanthin is a perfect fit, as it can be easily combined with a range of other ingredients to obtain maximum benefits while reducing total supplement consumption. For example, combinations with collagen
offer synergistic effects for skin health: a placebo-controlled study found that women taking an astaxanthin-collagen combination had significantly improved skin elasticity and skin barrier integrity, resulting in reduced moisture loss and a lower expression of collagen and elastin-degrading enzymes.8 Other antioxidants, such as ubiquinol
them feel as if they are eating a sweet treat rather than swallowing a tablet. The demographic for healthy ageing products is, to some extent, unlimited. However, different age groups also have different needs in terms of skin health. For instance, the ever-growing ageing
population wants to retain a youthful appearance into later life, thus contributing to the demand for premium beauty ingredients. Women over 40 often like to focus on repairing sun damage, while those in their 30s may start to notice the first signs of change and therefore seek preventative measures. Those under 25, however, are more concerned about reducing blemishes and finding a balance between oily and dry skin. In addition, men are also beginning to
focus on skin health yet may have different nutritional needs to women. Gender-specific dietary supplements already have a big market share, because they can be designed according to the differing needs of men and women, and personalised nutricosmetic approaches will surely gain ground too. Clearly, this creates an opportunity for natural ingredients such as astaxanthin to help improve the skin’s repair process through nutritional supplementation.
and vitamin E, can jointly protect skin from environmental stresses. Lipids enhance astaxanthin absorption. Classic ingredients like vitamin C and zinc also remain popular, and are supported by EFSA claims in Europe. Mimicking its natural presence in krill oil,
astaxanthin also partners perfectly with omega-3 fatty acids, and can even enhance the health benefits of krill oil. In addition, one of the latest trends is probiotics and prebiotics. Consumers are now aware of the link between a healthy microbiota and its benefits for the skin, thanks to emerging scientific evidence.
Outlook As a potent antioxidant with many health benefits backed by sound science, natural astaxanthin is well-equipped to meet consumer-led beauty demands. In addition, it offers product developers a broad range of dosage and combination possibilities, and meets the growing sustainability- driven requirements of today’s consumers.
