Sensegen to launch in personal care market
Sensegen, a recently rebranded subsidiary of Blue California, is preparing to enter the personal care, fragrance and flavours ingredients markets using the tag line ‘The Science of Good Sense’. It claims to be “the first 100% biotechnology-based solution provider serving these markets”. Based on the work of its
creative centre, the company expects a number of product launches in 2022. These will include “a line of clean, novel,
proprietary offerings, as well as natural and sustainable qualities of market favourites” in personal
Symrise works on sustainable extraction
Symrise has revealed that in November 2021, it began a three-year R&D collaboration with Antofénol of Plestan in Brittany, France. They will work together to develop green products, mainly cosmetic ingredients and fragrances, from agroextracts, via the sustainable eco-extraction techniques of microwave, ultrasound and vacuum technologies, which Antofénol has pioneered. “The technologies provide a number of
advantages: they can adapt well to various raw materials, they use fast and effective energy transfer, and they save time compared with conventional processes,” Symrise noted. The company started to work with Antofénol two years ago on several other projects. Separately, Symrise has launched SymSave
5E, a skincare formulation. This is the liquid variant of SymSave H, which was launched in crystalline form in 2013. The company said that many customers had requested a version of SymSave H they could process more easily. The water-soluble blend can be included into a formula without requiring any heat. SymSave 5E contains only multifunctional
ingredients and has a natural origin content of 60%. Potential applications are envisaged in emulsions, gels, wet wipes, shower gels and shampoos. Clinical tests have also found that it “respects the microbiome”, Symrise said. Advantages claimed for the new formula included antioxidant and soothing properties, improved skin moisturisation and better formulation aesthetics in general. It also protects the product against microbial contamination, helping with broad-spectrum protection against fungi and bacteria.

care, plus new captives for fragrances of all kinds. Sensegen works with
Conagen’s fermentation and bioconversion processes to produce optically active, nature- identical molecules. Among its first products is Plantarome M, which is said to be the first biotech source of musk, avoiding both the unethical harvesting of natural animal sources and the safety concerns around some synthetics.
