AZORES ADVENTURES 8 DAYS – UNCOVERING THE VERDANT ISLES

Bathed by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream, these little-known volcanic islands rise dramatically from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. We spend our time on two of the nine islands, Sao Miguel and Terceira, exploring their jagged landscapes and deep lava caves. We take a boat to search for elusive whales and dolphins and try local cuisine cooked in natural ovens cut out of the ground.

ITINERARY

Day 1 Fly to Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel Island. Days 2/4 Ponta Delgada Explore the island’s capital and take a boat trip in search of whales, dolphins, marlin and swordfish. Visit a small fishing village and dine at a local restaurant. Discover the volcanic centre of the island, spending a day in the Furnas Valley with its thermal springs, boiling mud pools and botanic mud gardens. Stop at the Sao Blas tea estates and the ‘fire lake’ of Lagoa do

Fogo. Eat a famous ‘cozido’ – food cooked by locals using the natural heat of the earth. Days 5/7 Terceira Island Fly to Terceira. Stay in capital of Angra do Heroismo and roam the Renaissance streets of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Climb down the chimney of an extinct volcano to see black lava caves. Final day option to travel north and swim in the volcanic rock pools at Biscoitos. Day 8 Fly to the UK.
