I can explain some rights and freedoms the ECHR guarantees.
The Council of Europe (CoE) was founded in 1949 to protect human rights, democracy and the rule of law in Europe. The CoE has 47 member states and is based in Strasbourg in France. In 1950, the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) was adopted by member states of the CoE. This is an international treaty based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The ECHR protects rights, including the right to: ● Life (Article 1) ● Freedom and security (Article 5) ● A fair trial in civil and criminal matters (Article 6) ● Respect for private and family life (Article 8) ● Freedom of thought, conscience and religion (Article 9) ● Freedom of expression (Article 10) ● Freedom of assembly (Article 11) ● Marry (Article 12) ● Own property (Protocol 1, Article 1) ● Education (Protocol 1, Article 2) ● Free elections (Protocol 1, Article 3) ● Freedom of movement within a country (Protocol 2, Article 4) ● Compensation if you have been convicted of a crime you were innocent of (Protocol 7, Article 3) And it bans:
● Torture or cruel or humiliating punishment (Article 3) ● Slavery and forced labour (Article 4)
