The following views were expressed: 1. The older residents do not want the site developed or the road widened.
2. Some residents think the supermarket will bring new facilities and increase the values of their homes.
3. People with children say the site should be used for leisure activities instead. 4. Historians and archaeologists do not want the old town walls damaged. 5. A group of architects believe that the proposed building is too high and would be an eyesore.
6. Politicians must listen to the views of the people and decide what they believe is in the best interests of the town.
The developers want to make money from the site. They have failed to get planning permission for their original plans. Your class is a company that specialises in sustainable development. Enhanced Developments have hired you to design a new plan for developing the site that will be sustainable, profi table and likely to encourage people to accept the proposal. Working in groups, you will each be allocated one of the following tasks: ● Architecture – your job is to design a building that appeals to people living in the area. You must ensure that it contains enough units to make it profi table.
● Costing – your job is to design a building that makes money. You must calculate how much it would cost to build and how much you could sell units for.
● Public relations (PR) – your job is to promote the development and say what is positive about it and how it will be better than what is currently there.
● Historians – you must look at how the concerns of historians and archaeologists can be satisfi ed. ● Sustainable development (SD) – you must look at how this project can be sustainable. ● Community liaison (CL) – you must look at how you can encourage the local community to support this project.
In your group, discuss how you could amend this design to make it sustainable, profi table and something that will be supported by the people.
