I can categorise the advantages and disadvantages of EU membership.
Working in pairs, read the statements below and categorise them as advantages or disadvantages. For the disadvantages discuss and note what could be done to improve these.
1. Since the EU was founded there have been no wars between member states. 2. Many people have moved to Ireland from other EU member states and work in essential jobs.
3. With over 400 million people living in the EU, Irish businesses have a huge market for their goods.
4. The European Commission is not democratically elected. 5. The EU promotes environmental protection and has led to cleaner beaches, etc. 6. EU citizens can live and travel anywhere in the EU without a visa. 7. Ireland is the only English-speaking member of the EU. 8. Smaller countries are poorly represented in the European Parliament.
9. The EU takes a long time to make decisions because it must get agreement from so many groups.
10. Nineteen EU members use the euro, which makes trade and travel easier in the EU. Disadvantages of EU membership: How could this disadvantage be improved?
