The European Economic Community (EEC) was set up by the Treaty of Rome in 1957 and by 1993 a single market had been formed. This allowed free movement of goods, money, services and people within the member states of the EEC. It brought cooperation between countries in Europe to prevent any more devastating wars like World Wars I and II.
The EEC established a common agricultural policy to guarantee farmers a good price for their products. Under the 1993 Treaty of Maastricht, the EEC became the EU to show that it involved more than just economic union.
