Fake news refers to news or stories that are intended to deliberately mislead readers or viewers. Fake news can take diff erent forms. It can be: ● Obviously fake, often because it is satirical or funny ● Biased ● Intentionally false and misleading.
In reality, the fake news we see is more likely to be one of the fi rst two types. The 1938 headline on the right from The New York Times shows how many listeners to a radio broadcast called The War of the Worlds, about a fi ctional invasion by Martians, believed it was true and panicked.
The image on the left was frequently used by Donald Trump supporters looking to build a wall along the US border with Mexico. It was supposed to show a caravan of male-only refugees trying to get into the United States. It was revealed to be a photo taken a few years earlier of Pakistani asylum seekers on the Greek island of Lesbos.
Sometimes deep fake videos are used. These generally show a video of famous person speaking but the words are spoken by somebody else.
