The following are some solutions to water shortages. Decide which of these would be helpful in Ireland and which are helpful in the developing world. Tick both if both apply. Then explain why they are suitable solutions.

1. Launch a campaign to educate people about their behaviour
2. Collect rainwater
3. Build desalination plants – these take the salt from seawater
4. Increase the cost of water
5. Bore wells in villages
6. Use drip irrigation, which delivers water directly to plants’ roots
7. Grow drought- resistant crops
8. Ban fl ushing raw sewage into the seas
9. Pipe safe and clean water to areas with physical shortages
