What is an infographic?
An infographic (short for information graphic) is information or data shown using pictures, data, maps, charts and a small amount of text. It is meant to sum up detailed information in a visual format that is easy to understand. An infographic makes information easier to explain. Good infographics attract people’s attention and encourage people to read them. The infographic above was produced by the Central Statistics Offi ce to show the impact of Covid-19 on people.
Why are infographics used? Infographics are a very helpful way to: ● Share complicated information in a way that is easy to understand. For example, a government infographic could be used to explain the main fi ndings of a census.
● Raise awareness about an issue. The human rights charity Amnesty produced this infographic to highlight the danger of guns as in the US city of Chicago.
● Promote a campaign on social media, as an infographic is more likely to be shared, read and understood than a report.
