Exercise 8A Identifying words I associate with homelessness Key Skills
Success criteria
I can identify some aspects of homelessness.
The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage must ensure that there is a supply of good-quality housing in the country. The Department’s fi gures on homelessness are based on the number of people staying in emergency accommodation. According to homeless charity Focus Ireland, there are three types of homelessness:
1. The visible homeless are people who are sleeping rough or staying in emergency accommodation paid for by the State.
2. The hidden homeless are people sleeping in insecure accommodation, such as staying with friends.
3. The at risk of homelessness are people who have housing at the moment but risk losing it. They may no longer be able to aff ord to pay rent or they may be in State care and will soon be leaving it.
People lose their human dignity when they lose their home. Their basic human rights are not met, and this can cause them to lose their sense of self-identity and self-confi dence.
In each box, write one word that comes to mind when you think of homelessness.
