News sources such as blogs and social networks can report news faster than TV news, newspapers and their online sites. They are also generally free. TV news and newspapers have experienced journalists and editors to check a story before it is posted. Blogs and social networks often do not, and this can lead to incorrect information being posted.
Social media can be benefi cial for making information available. During the Arab Spring in the early 2010s, people protested against authoritarian governments in North Africa and the Middle East. Information on when and where protests were taking place spread on social media. Social media in these countries was not controlled in the same way that newspapers and television were. The tweet on the right is an example of how social media was used:
