Exercise 49A Identifying the positives and negatives of development Key Skills Success criteria
I can list positives and negatives of developments.
When a new development in the community is positive, there are more activities for residents, better jobs are available, and more people come into the area with skills. Positive development can bring new life to an area that had been disadvantaged or underdeveloped. On the other hand, development that is not sustainable can ignore the residents, destroy the landscape and cause environmental damage. Some developments can have both positive and negative outcomes.
Look at the following examples of development and identify the positive and negative eff ects of each. Positives
Negatives
1. A new greenway for walkers and cyclists is being built alongside the road. As a result, the road is being narrowed and the speed limit reduced.
2. In an eff ort to move away from relying on fossil fuels, a new wind park is being built off the coast of a popular tourist area.
3. A new sewage treatment plant is being built on the site of an old factory near a town.
4. An exclusive new golf club is being built on a scenic site where locals go walking.
